Your Ultimate Front Row Top 10!
(NEW YORK) By all accounts, this was a very unusual fashion seasons in terms of celebrity bookings. Marc banned them altogether in New York; Milan couldn’t get any more famous vampires than Ashley Greene to the shows, and Kanye decided to only request tickets to couture for Fall 2010, leaving Parisian photographers with nothing to work with but Lindsay Lohan. But as long there are shows with front row seat assignments, the chics and freaks will come--and their efforts will not go unnoticed. Without further ado, your essential front row moments from four cities and some 400 shows…
VALENTINE UHOVSKI
1. Maria Shriver and Christina Schwarzenegger
Where: Stella McCartney, YSL
Why: For young Christina, it’s always nice to have a mom like the First Lady of California, who can take you to Paris and shows during your school break. Shriver actually made Mickey Boardman’s week, too, by complimenting his necklace on the corner of Rue Saint-Honoré.
2. Sean "Diddy" Combs
Where: Gareth Pugh
Why: “I’m here for my album, ironically called Last Train to Paris, and since I was in town, I requested tickets to the show. Luckily for me, they were able to accommodate,” he explained. “I’m just here to learn from the young masters like Gareth.” Of course you are, and that’s exactly why we love you--even though Suzy Menkes, Hilary Alexander, and Godfrey Deeney had a pretty colorful front row argument about you should be addressed. For the record, Diddy and Puff still works just fine.
3. Shaun White
Where: DSquared2
Why: Because the Catens totally had an Olympic hook-up after designing the garb for the Opening and Closing ceremonies--and they kept up the Vancouver spirit by inviting one the Games’ biggest stars to the show, mere days after White won his second straight gold. But at 9 a.m. (the show’s usual start time), he clearly didn’t get as much attention in Italy as perhaps he deserved.
4. Janet Jackson
Where: Todd Lynn, Pringle of Scotland, A Child Of The Jago, LFW, Vivienne Westwood Red Label
Why: Last season Miss Jackson went for the big dogs (Ralph, Versace, Lanvin) and this time around she was determined to support the British Fashion Council. LFW, anyone?
5. John Malkovich
Where: Michael Bastian
Why: Weirdly, the lauded actor launched his new menswear collection, Technobohemian, during Fashion Week. Could be have been at Bastian to scout his competition?
6. Courtney Love
Where: Roberto Cavalli, Pringle of Scotland
Why: Love always likes to throw us a curveball with her front row RSVPs (remember when she went to Narciso?!) so her Bobby Cavalli tribute in Milan was the most welcome and random. At the dinner for the show, she entertained her seatmates to the fullest, drank vino with the host and gave us something to talk about.
7. Whoopi Goldberg
Where: Calvin Klein and Chado Ralph Rucci
Why: “André (Leon Talley) kind tagged me along with him,” said the Oscar winner. “But we’re like family by now. We practically spent holiday together and I cooked!”
8. John Slattery
Where: Nanette Lepore
Why: Behind every Mad Men star there’s a beautiful woman, and in Slattery’s case. it’s his wife Talia Balsam, who adores Lepore. She, of course, dragged her loved one to The Tents, and we just loved the randomness of it all.
9. Gary Dourdan
Where: Viktor & Rolf, Costume National
Why: The CSI actor played a show in Paris and had too much free time on his hands. "The inspirational process is very interesting for me," he told us. "I think it's interesting to look at inspirational fashion." Sure you do!
10. Vanessa Paradis
Where: Chanel
Why: OK, we weren't that surprised to see Vanessa acting just as pleasant and wonderful as she is in real life--but we were astounded at how famous she really is in her native country. All those photogs, bodyguards, and screaming handlers for the beautiful Mrs. Johnny Depp? Are we missing something in America?!
